Banknote collecting is
attracting more and more followers the world over. For many years, however, the absence of
a detailed catalogue of Polish banknotes has been widely felt. To fill this need, it was
decided to compile just such a catalogue which would be easily accessed and easy to use,
even for persons unconnected with banknote collecting, such as historians.
The present catalogue
embraces a broad range of illustrative material. Maps allow the collector to place
on what Polish territory or territory historically connected with Poland a given banknote
circulated.
The catalogue standardises
the use of the term "banknote" for all paper money, regardless of the
inscription on the face or the back. The only exceptions to this are the bank drafts of
the Polish State Loan Bank of just two fixed denominations of 50 000 000 mkp and 100 000
000 mkp dated 20.11. 1923 (period of hyperinflation), which have been included in this
catalogue. Security printers were incapable of keeping up with the galloping inflation.
The lack of high denomination banknotes (the highest - 10 000 000 mkp - did not solve the
problem) forced the Bank's hand into providing limited use bank drafts as legal tender,
but their use gradually increased, their validity prolonged by three months by being
appropriately stamped on the face. They were free of stamp duty and were accepted without
any reservations in all branches of the Polish State Loan Bank. In a certain sense they
replaced banknotes. In mid-January of 1924 the Polish Library Printers in Bydgoszcz began
work on the design of new banknotes of 50 and 100 million marks. Work on the new banknotes
was halted by the currency reform. Only the face of the 50 million mark note
had been completed.
The banknotes have been
catalogued chronologically, according to their dates of issue (with the exception of the baknotes
dated 28.02.1919) inclusive of those banknotes which were never issued.
The present catalogue
embraces the following issue periods:
- banknotes of the Government
of the Governorship General of Warsaw, 1916-1918
- banknotes of the Republic
of Poland, 1918-1939
- banknotes of the Bank of

period of German occupation, 1939-1944

Republic of Poland, 1944-1989
